Chen Quilin, River, River.  2005.
"Chen Qiulin’s body of works is highly affected by the critical situation characterizing southern China from which this young artist comes from. Chen Qiulin is one of the millions of Chinese who have been deprived of their homes as well as of their memories because of the massive project of the Three Gorges Dam that since 1994 has been literally swallowing many towns located along the banks of the river Chang Jiang. The project of the Dam along with the environmental and societal risks it implies, is the main theme of Chen Qiulin’s oeuvre like the 2005 video River, River testifies. In this piece the artist presents a touching image of the everyday life as experienced by the inhabitants of those small villages along the river narrated by two young adolescents and two actors dressed as Beijing opera characters. By blending modernity and tradition in a clever way, the artist proves to feel compelled to narrate the sad reality she lives in, undergoing the tragic yet inevitable annihilation of the past." - Ravenna 2008
